Alexandre Jouveaux

Uchizy, Burgundy, France

La Vigne du Clou 2022

A show of force from this younger vine parcel in Uchizy, Chardonnay planted in 1989 on Clay and Limestone soils. All of the parcels Alexandre farms are in isolated locations surrounded by forests which act as a natural barrier, separating them from the chemically managed vines of the Mâcon. A direct pressing of these grapes and a long, gentle aging on lees in Foudres for just under 4 years. Alexandre's approach is alway to leave wines for as long as they need to harmonize before bottling. Various amounts of topping up takes place in the cellar depending on the cuvée. On the label "non-ouillé" is denoted this vintage, signifying this as non-topped up, leaning in a more oxidative direction, à la Schueller. Sublime golden fruit, with a piercing attack. Generously nutty with richness from the extensive lees aging. The palate is glossy and deeply poised, with expansive acidity in the mouth, and salty, minerally-fuled citrus fruits. An entry point in understanding the cult appeal of Jouveaux.

Le Mont 2024

An iconic cuveé and label for Alexandre. Representing one of his older vineyards, a small parcel of Chardonnay planted in the early 60's. Less than a hectare of vines at high elevation, on Clay Limestone soils. Isolated and pristine. The fruit from Le Mont sees a hard direct pressing and aging on lees for 2 years in Foudres. Occasionally topped up in the cellar, this vintage is very gently oxidative, but its highlight is its intensely mineral edge. Fragrant and saline with a flinty/ rocky nose. This is Alexandre's most pure and hyper-fresh cuvée. Citrus driven with explosive energy and acidity. Richness and rockiness in balance. A breath of fresh air, and a wine thats completely invigorating. Apples, citrus, pears, and stone. A canon bottle for those who chase the wilder side of Burgundy. Put this one away if you can.
