Laboratorio Rupestre - Erik & Hal Rosdahl
Mount Arabi, Yecla, Spain
Monastrell (Mourvèdre) from 80 year old vines, on gravel. At 850 meters above sea level. Erik rented a small plot of Monastrell from a site called Los Cerrillares, a windy parcel on bedrock, until 2018 when the owner sold the land to businessmen, who left it abandoned to eventually be uprooted. In 2020, they were given access to a parcel of Monastrell vines nearby, of similar age. The very last Monastrell they produced, and the second last wine of their final vintage, 2021. 15 days of maceration with 3 months fermentation in amphoras. Pressed into neutral barrel for 1 year. Dark as all hell, nearly black in color. The wine is viscous and almost opaque. Heady with intoxicating aromas on the nose. Figs, black cherries, and a Passito-like quality. Its density and rounded texture tell you there's some residual sugars, but other elements are felt including a high degree of alcohol, tannin, and acidity. A legacy wine of the project to keep for a future date.
