Patrick Desplats
Anjou, Loire, France
Diane is a “UFO” according to Desplats; a wine that was made once and will never be made again. 2016 was a disastrous vintage for Patrick as he lost almost all his fruit to frost. As such, Patrick decided to harvest everything that survived and make one wine, which amounted to 700 litres total for the year. This is a rich and full wine due to some of the grapes being picked at over maturity. The nose is dominated by caramelized fruits and candied citrus skin. The palette has less sweetness than expected with notes of marmalade, mandarin, smoke and tamarind that are cut with the perplexing but very welcomed flavour of mineral water. A UFO if there ever was one, and a wine capturing the complexities of life and nature in the bottle.
