Patrick Desplats
Anjou, Loire, France
Named after the Celtic goddess who protects horses, Epona consists of 25 varieties, both white and red. Planted in 2004 in a mere half-hectare (1.25 acres) with schist soils. All “Franc de pieds” vines from ungrafted pre-phylloxera rootstock. Planted on a plot not cultivated since before the first world war, “so it has never known chemistry”. The two dominant grapes here are Chenin and Pineau d’Aunis. All grapes are direct pressed, therefore white in color. This wine takes its time to show itself, but when it does it comes with plenty of leesy and spicy qualities. Limoncello and kefir upfront, with a good cut of VA and fragrant fruits lying underneath. Lychees, white table grapes and a soft lipstick aroma.
