Patrick Desplats
Anjou, Loire, France
A blend of all of Patrick’s usable white grapes from this frost vintage. The actual blend is unknown but based on the grapes Patrick works with we can assume that it's mainly Chenin Blanc, and Sauvignon Blanc, with possibly some Chardonnay. What’s clear with Marguerite, is that we have an orange wine that has seen a significant amount of time macerating on skins, a choice no doubt influenced by Pat’s new amphorae. Marguerite is a magnificent rusty orange colour and has a late harvest bouquet of aromatics to match: Persimmon, allspice, mace, mandarin, and nectarine. Marguerite’s palate is sublime in its tension and balance, a sphere of muscular tannins and toned acidity with attention-grabbing length. Even now in it’s young state, Marguerite impresses us with it’s freshness and verve, but what we see here also suggests that in time it will become something truly remarkable.
