Nikau Farms - Dane Johns & Hannah Miller
Gippsland, Victoria, Australia
Tolone block is the smallest and highest elevation parcel on Dane and Hannah's property. Planted mainly to Riesling with a small amount of Chardonnay. The vines are an average of 27 years without ever seeing chemical treatments. Sandstone with a high content of silica, the parcel is exposed high up on the ridge, and often suffers the elements and therefore, very low yielding. 100% Riesling. With the Nikau wines, Dane aims to do as little as possible, in an effort to show the natural purity of the fruit. 48 hours on skins and pressed directly into stainless steel tank to ferment over the winter. Never moved or racked off the gross lees, but simply bottled direct from tank after 8 months. 18 additional months aging in bottle before release. At a delicate 9% this is the most breathy and concentrated white we’ve come across. Rich character with a breezy and fragrant presentation. Electric lemon, with a buttery side, yet precise and beautifully fluid.
