Anders Frederik Steen & Anne Bruun Blauert
Valvignères, Ardèche, France
Grenache Blanc from their old vines in Valvignères. Juice from the last day of a 4-day long slow pressing. At that point, the juice was so caramelized and oxidized that they weren't sure what to do with it. They set it aside, not wanting to blend it with anything. Left in demi-muid in the back of the cellar to ferment for two years, when they checked back on it, the wine had turned around and become something truly special. One of the most unique and delicious things we’ve tasted from Anne and Anders to date. The nose is unexpected with plenty of umami, a sweet corn or mushroom thing, and an aspect that reminds us of cognac or calvados. The palate has the expected oxidized fruit. Ripe stone fruit character, with a bit of tannic grip. Not an orange wine despite its color. A fully unique wine to come out of unique circumstances.
