Domaine La Bohème - Patrick Bouju & Justine Loiseau
Saint-Georges-sur-Allier, Auvergne, France
The re-emergence of a rare gem! A cuvée not produced since 2016 due to a string of bad vintages. Chardonnay from a small clay-limestone vineyard, 10 minutes north on the hillsides outside of Chauriat. Vines they’ve worked since 2007, ranging in age from 35-60+ years. The site is one of their coldest and highest in elevation, always producing a wine with exemplary acidity and mineral character. Pressed direct the wine ferments and ages on lees for 12 months in a portion of old oak barrels and acacia barrels. The Blanc is a force to be reckoned with and an example of how Chardonnay from the Auvergne can stand toe to toe with the very best examples anywhere in France, namely those from Burgundy and Chablis. Patrick and Justine’s top white cuvée is immediately evident, a soaring expression of place. On the nose, the terroir is palpable with smoky and rocky qualities. Displaying a slight tropical tone, it's incredibly focussed and possibly the most serious of wines they make with incredible aging potential.
